Everything You Need To Know About Moths
They may look harmless but did you know that there are 2,400 recorded moth species in the UK? There are 4 main offenders who much their way through our British homes. Moths aren’t a health risk and are considered a pest because of the severe damage caused to housing fabrics and furnishings.
The 4 Types Of Different Moths
Brown House moths ((Hofmannophila pseudospretella)
Common Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella)
Case-Bearing Clothes moth (Tinea pellionella)
White-Shouldered House moths (Endrosis sarcitrella)
However it is the larvae that are responsible for the damage not the adult moths themselves. Female clothes moths lay around 50 eggs over a two- or three-week period, after which they die. These eggs can hatch within a week. The hatched larvae then enter into a moulting process, which can last from a month to more than two years. The tiny white grubs burrow into fabric leaving a trail of webbing, cocoons and even droppings as evidence of the presence. Larvae have been known to eat wool, cashmere, silk, cotton, linen, fur, feathers, hair and carpet but do have a preference for more high quality fabrics.
With a wing span smaller than 2cm they are often shades of grey and brown and prefer to inhabit darker locations.
How To Treat An Infestation
Have you noticed that your clothing has been damaged? If so washing woollen clothing in hot water can effectively destroy eggs and larvae but dry cleaning will treat garments that cannot withstand a hot wash. Always clean clothing thoroughly before packing it away this is especially important if you buy second hand fabrics as these may transport an infestation into your home! Store clothes and fabrics in air tight containers away from humidity. Vacuum all the affected areas thoroughly to remove larvae and eggs but be sure to empty the vacuum cleaner bag or they’ll hatch there, too.
Essential oils such as lavender are considered mildly effective due to their strong aroma however persistent infestations may require the services of a professional pest controller.
